Chanel 101

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know much about Chanel whatsoever. I know...the shame! I like the bags just like the next girl, but never really been too interested in them. Last weekend, my sis and I visited the Sak's Chanel shop-in-shop pretending we were rich girls just to play dress up for a few minutes. {If you've never done this--try it! It's so fun! } While asking to see the gray clutch behind the counter, we got a quick little lesson that I had to share. Some of you might already know this so you're welcome to say "duh!" at any point while reading this.

There are two classic Chanel models that are used in creating variations over and over, each and every season. The Classic Flap is the most popular with its famous CC on the closure and leather intertwined in the chain handles. The Reissue has the original "Mademoiselle" lock {name comes from the fact that Coco Chanel never married}, and the regular chain handles. The Classic Flap's interlocking CC closure was introduced in the 1980s with Karl Lagerfeld's variation, making the Mademoiselle lock much more vintage and just plain old cool in my opinion. Coco Chanel grew up in an orphanage and she took a lot of inspiration from there to create handbags: the chain link straps are similar to those that the caretakers would use to dangle keys from their waist, the red color on the inside was the same color of the children's uniforms, etc. You can read lots more about the differences in the two styles here.

Catching these little tidbits of history makes me more interested in learning more about the fashion house. Hey, it also almost made me want to spend a whole mortgage payment on an "investment piece" but then I snapped right back into reality... Here are a few of my most favorite Chanel bags I played with. As you can see, the Mademoiselle locks won my heart.

Palette Pairings: Minty Fresh

I can tell that Spring is soon approaching when all I see everywhere on everything is pastel colors--and I'm not just talking Easter eggs and bunnies. It looks like this Spring's number one color is mint. From mint jeans and handbags, to mint rooms and furniture--mint is the fresh new thing. When worn, it looks best with a tan; when used in the home, it looks best with metallic pieces. Here's some minty fresh inspiration:

Simple Shoe Math

If I won the lottery, I'd spend 30% on handbags, 30% on clothes, and 30% on home decor {10% will be invested into stock because I'd eventually need more money for more handbags, clothes, and home decor}. But I probably wouldn't bother buying heels. They're not my thing. As much as a girly girl people think I am, I suck at wearing heels, and would much rather live in flats than spend my time walking in torturous pain. But not in 2012--I made a resolution to woman up!

My sister gifted these for me for my birthday and I wore them out to dinner and dancing. Dinner was tolerable, dancing was NOT. As awesome as they are, they must stick to being just "dinner shoes". After years of analyzing why I'm such a wuss, I finally accepted that there's a mathematical formula to this: The heel to platform ratio. It determines the incline, and therefore determines the comfort/tolerance level.{LOL I'm cracking up at myself just writing this} So here's how I have to measure each time I shop:

I know this seems like common sense, but I think I finally got it. Get ready feet, 2012 is going to be fun! I just pray to shoe gods that the platform trend never goes out of style! Who's with me?!

*Note: I made up my own heel height numbers to keep the math easy!

Social Media Week: Miami

Well, that was fast. I was able to cross off #13 from my 30 by 30 list this afternoon! I attended my first Social Media seminar at Social Media Week: Miami at the Adrienne Arsht Center with a few of my fellow co-workers. I was worried I wouldn't be able to make it because it was during work hours, but I made the time for it and paid for that later I'm so glad I did. I attended the seminar called Personal Branding Through Social Media and although most of it was pretty obvious/common sense type of chatter, it was nice to hear from a panel of professionals who depend on social media to make it through modern day business. The seminar was free, standing-room-only, full of people in the biz who rely on Twitter to develop their personal brand. Coincidental Plug: Follow me here!

Social Media Week ends tomorrow but if you can't make it, you can catch some of the seminars online here.

Thanks Sephora!

Every year I pick up my free Sephora birthday goodie, and every year it just gets better and better. This year they gave away a couple of lip balms that I probably would have never sampled otherwise. I'm so glad I did! The Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment by Fresh glides on so smoothly and feels like an instant moisturizer within seconds of application. It's got a nice pink tint, SPF 15 protective benefits, and it's small enough to keep in your pocket.

The regular Sugar Lip Treatment is also really hydrating but doesn't have the extra hint of color that I need.

I don't know if I'd pay the whopping $22.50 for it, but definitely think it was a great gift. Keep 'em coming, Sephora!

Palette Pairings: I Scream for Sherbet

I realize that one of my favorite things to post about is color. I tend to obsess over new color trends in what seems like each week! And because one new commenter recently asked, I was inspired to start a weekly color themed post. Allow me to introduce you to: Palette Pairings! I don't yet have a designated weekday to commit, but I'll try this out for a while and see if it sticks. Here goes nothing!

We just got 1.5 days of what we Miamians call "Winter" and I'm already jonesing for Springtime! I think I'm ready for flowers and showers and fresh new palettes. I'm currently obsessing over sherbet colors and I can't wait to use this color scheme on my wardrobe, parties, design projects, and of course home decor! Picture pale pastels mixed with punchy brights. Pair this palette with neutrals like khaki, nude, olive, or gray, and you've got yourself a funky Palette Pairing!

Last week I just got {this much} closer to the big 3-0. As much as I'd like to think that I'm still 22 inside, reality set in and I remembered there's still so much to do by next Feb. 4th! I do feel like a lucky duck though. I've accomplished a lot of my major goals by 29, but there's always room for more!

I compiled a list of 30 things to do by 30. I tried to be as realistic as possible. Some are small, attainable goals, and some I think might roll over to my 30 by 31 list.

1. Visit San Francisco

2. Copy a famous restaurant's dish at home
3. Wear these for more than an hour without crying that my feet hurt

Birthday Bag

Happy birthday to me! My hubby got me the bag I've been after for a while. Check out the new Longchamp Metallic Equestrian Grid! It's a long name for an actually very simple bag. It's a super light-weight canvas material that makes it the easiest thing to tote around. But what gives it a little extra bit of fancy is the metallic shimmer it has.

So, of course, I'm all into the feminine equestrian look now. Modern equestrian inspiration below!

DIY Metallic Coral

I've been spotting some really nice coral at HomeGoods lately {or maybe it's faux coral} that has caught my eye. It's not your typical white coral...it's silver! I had a piece that I didn't really care for so I decided to give it the metallic finish I think it desperately needed...a fresh coat {or three} of silver spray paint! Pretty glamorous, huh?
