Social Media Week: Miami

Well, that was fast. I was able to cross off #13 from my 30 by 30 list this afternoon! I attended my first Social Media seminar at Social Media Week: Miami at the Adrienne Arsht Center with a few of my fellow co-workers. I was worried I wouldn't be able to make it because it was during work hours, but I made the time for it and ~~paid for that later~~ I'm so glad I did. I attended the seminar called Personal Branding Through Social Media and although most of it was pretty obvious/common sense type of chatter, it was nice to hear from a panel of professionals who depend on social media to make it through modern day business. The seminar was free, standing-room-only, full of people in the biz who rely on Twitter to develop their personal brand. Coincidental Plug: Follow me here!

Every year I pick up my free Sephora birthday goodie, and every year it just gets better and better. This year they gave away a couple of lip balms that I probably would have never sampled otherwise. I'm so glad I did! The Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment by Fresh glides on so smoothly and feels like an instant moisturizer within seconds of application. It's got a nice pink tint, SPF 15 protective benefits, and it's small enough to keep in your pocket.

The regular Sugar Lip Treatment is also really hydrating but doesn't have the extra hint of color that I need.

I don't know if I'd pay the whopping $22.50 for it, but definitely think it was a great gift. Keep 'em coming, Sephora!

Palette Pairings: I Scream for Sherbet

I realize that one of my favorite things to post about is color. I tend to obsess over new color trends in what seems like each week! And because one new commenter recently asked, I was inspired to start a weekly color themed post. Allow me to introduce you to: Palette Pairings! I don't yet have a designated weekday to commit, but I'll try this out for a while and see if it sticks. Here goes nothing!

We just got 1.5 days of what we Miamians call "Winter" and I'm already jonesing for Springtime! I think I'm ready for flowers and showers and fresh new palettes. I'm currently obsessing over sherbet colors and I can't wait to use this color scheme on my wardrobe, parties, design projects, and of course home decor! Picture pale pastels mixed with punchy brights. Pair this palette with neutrals like khaki, nude, olive, or gray, and you've got yourself a funky Palette Pairing!

Last week I just got {this much} closer to the big 3-0. As much as I'd like to think that I'm still 22 inside, reality set in and I remembered there's still so much to do by next Feb. 4th! I do feel like a lucky duck though. I've accomplished a lot of my major goals by 29, but there's always room for more!

I compiled a list of 30 things to do by 30. I tried to be as realistic as possible. Some are small, attainable goals, and some I think might roll over to my 30 by 31 list.

Happy birthday to me! My hubby got me the bag I've been after for a while. Check out the new Longchamp Metallic Equestrian Grid! It's a long name for an actually very simple bag. It's a super light-weight canvas material that makes it the easiest thing to tote around. But what gives it a little extra bit of fancy is the metallic shimmer it has.

DIY Metallic Coral

I've been spotting some really nice coral at HomeGoods lately {or maybe it's faux coral} that has caught my eye. It's not your typical white coral...it's silver! I had a piece that I didn't really care for so I decided to give it the metallic finish I think it desperately needed...a fresh coat {or three} of silver spray paint! Pretty glamorous, huh?

A Little Rusty

I became so obsessed with colored denim recently that I bought 3 new denim colors without really thinking what the heck I would pair them with. These colorful bottoms would probably look best with neutral colored tops, but I wanted something a little out of the norm with my new Rust Colored jeans. After a whole lot of research (about 3 nights worth, I swear!), I finally coordinated 6 color combos that I think would look modern and fresh with my new rusties. What do you think?

Now back to shopping to try and find matches! Good thing I have a few birthday coupons to use up this month!

Make-up Recs

A little birdie told me she wanted to see some of my most favorite make up recommendations. I hesitated writing this post because I'm really not that girl. Although I want everything at Sephora, I just don't wear much make up and honestly, I'm not that great at applying it. I wish I was more into it, just the same way I wish I was a "shoe person" but that's a whole other post. So, here are some recommendations from a pseudo-make up-lover:

I try not to leave my house or car without this slapped on my face. The MAC StudioFix Foundation Powder gives great coverage and feels light and airy. I can't count how many of these I've gone through over the years. It works best when applied over moisturized skin.

I take it waaaay back with my mascara. It's the good old fashioned Maybelline Great Lash in Blackest Black. The brush works wonders. An oldie but definitely a goodie!

And when I feel fancy, I'll use DiorShow mascara. Talk about lash lengthening! This one is true, promise.

I recently purchased the Stila eyeliner for it's marker tip. I saw this post about another marker tip eyeliner but because it doesn't come in black, I opted for the Stila version. I really like it. It takes a little getting used to, but the marker makes it really easy to get a straight line.

A Natural Beauty

Way back when I was a little girl being dragged along by my parents to Miami's tourist trap (aka Bayside), I remember sneaking into this weird hippie store where they sold beautiful natural stones. My favorite was the amethyst (probably because it's my birthstone) and all the colorful agate. I don't think I've ever gotten over the pretty stones since!

Agate is easier to find these days at affordable prices. I picked up a set of beautiful purple agate bookends at Homegoods last year but I think they need some Agate Coaster friends...

Floral Fixation

Not really sure what came over me for this new year, but I am all in with florals lately. And I'm not even talking about the pretty pattern on clothing...I'm talking real plants, herbs, and flowers! After making a few cacti terrariums, I now want to stock up on pretty flowers to bring some more oxygen and life to my home. I have a bunch of empty vases that need some lovin'. It's too bad that my favorite flower in the universe (ranunculus) is so hard to find here because I would stuff my house with more vases if I could!

DIY Terrarium #3

Walking into West Elm the other day, I was re-inspired by the beautiful terrarium set up they had. My sis was bit by the terrarium bug and wanted one, so we bought the large open face vase.

Practice makes perfect. This time I was prepared. I bought gloves to shield the cacti's stabbing, and I got some great tips from my cousin. She was so right--Putting the rocks above the soil made it so much easier to keep the plants in place. I went shopping for the prettiest cacti and succulents, and put it all together today. Here's my latest terrarium with white marble chips and a nice collection of 4 plants. Love this vase!

And this is me and my ponytail shopping for ideas at Home Depot. Next time, I'm hitting the local nurseries for a little more variety!

Lots of blogs are buzzing about C. Wonder--a new brand with genius graphics, eclectic style, and amazing merchandising. It's no wonder it's absolutely amazing...it was born from a super talented family. The Einstein behind C. Wonder is Tory Burch's ex-hubbs, a venture capitalist who is obviously just as creative. There are only a handful of stores open and of course, they're no where near Miami, so when my sis told me she was going to NYC for vacay I told her she has to make a pit-stop at the Soho shop.

My DIY New Year's Eve Party

We decided to host a NYE party just in time to get Christmas decor at 50% off on the day after Christmas. So convenient! With a little tinsel and pretty shimmery paper, a NYE party was born.

DIY Tinsel Stirrers
{So simple! Hot glue a 1/2 inch piece of tinsel garland to a wooden skewer, insert into champagne glass, and voila!}

Champagne Mixers
{These are Voss water bottles that I emptied out and covered with a label. I liked the silver tops it comes with so I matched it with shimmery white paper and printed the juice name in a gold colored deco font to keep with the color theme}

Tinsel 2012 Banner
{The numbers were cut out from cardboard, then hot glued the tinsel garland to it. I taped the numbers to the wall so that it stayed put, instead of stringing it on the grosgrain ribbon.}

Invite and Bubbly Bar Signs
{I can't take credit for these. The lovely duo at Lustratype created my invite and signs. They can customize any graphic for your print or web needs. I wanted an old Deco look in gold and peach tones...is it perfect or what?}

There were some more DIY projects done but they weren't photographed...the night went by so fast! I hope that the rest of 2012 takes its sweet time. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Ahh, so happy that one of my all-time fave fabrics is back on trend! When I was little I used to have chambray everything (dresses, shirts, skirts, shoes, bags, etc.) But back then I had no idea it was called chambray and I just called it soft jean. Anyway, it's no wonder it's back--chambray is classic and can be matched up with almost anything...except more denim. {Sorry, Jay Leno}

It's Christmas!

We are definitely feeling the Christmas spirit around here! This is the first year that we finally have our own place to decorate for Christmas. With 2 years worth of Christmas decor collecting, we have a nice amount of material to get this house looking cheery!

I waited waaay too long for my ginormous LED tree but Black Friday saved my life. {Notice there are no presents under the tree...thank Domino for this}

A Love for Calais

ZGallerie has the best lighting in all the land. Seriously, their lamps and chandeliers are the classiest numbers I've ever seen in a realistic price range. In looking for lighting for my dining room, I went back and forth between almost all of ZGallerie's options for months. I finally settled on a copycat that I will open on Christmas Day (WOO! Stay tuned for pics coming soon) but it was definitely not an easy decision. I racked my brain for months.

My #1 lighting love was the Calais. It's modern yet classic, has the nicest lines to accentuate its shape, and the color options are fab.

I wasn't able to find too many pics online of this chandelier displayed in other people's homes, so I guess that means it's also really unique! Have I sold you on it yet? No? Well guess what...It's on sale RIGHT NOW! There! :)

So Fresh and So Clean

{Whoa, this is my third review post in a row.}

Anyway, I love to sample new products, but nothing has my heart more than these squeaky-clean must haves. Some are part of my daily routine, and I would go bananas if they become discontinued.

So without further adieu, these are a few of my favorite things {cue in Christmas carol beat}:

1. De~Luxe Rosemary Mint Foaming Scrub: I swear by this scrub. I've used it with every shower I've taken for the last 3 years or so and it's totally paid off. I wouldn't shower without it. Ask my friends--they'll tell you how extraordinarily soft my arms and elbows are; they tell me all the time :)

2. Olay Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System: I have a buddy who uses the Clarisonic and has perfect, pore-less skin. I was all for trying it until I saw the hefty price tag. Enter the Olay copycat. It's great and in my opinion it probably works just as good for a 1/10 of the price. I've only been using it for about 2 weeks but I can already see results. The brush is really soft and it's always nice to see the leftover make up that it picks up after a good scrub.

3. Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy Eucalyptus Hand Soap: My sister taught us about this and my husband kind of refuses to use any other hand soap at our house. It leaves your hands super soft and it smells incredible. Best part: you can still smell so fresh & so clean hours later with this stuff!

4. Kerastase Bain Satin Shampoo & Conditioner: Hands down, this is the best for my hair. It's pretty spency so I try not to use it with every wash {only when I really need a good hair day), but if money was no object I would have closets of jars of this stuff. My hair becomes the silkiest, smoothest, and most manageable when I use Kerastase.

Hmm what else can I review? My opinions are on a roll.

Need a Good Blo?

Of all the sexual innuendos being thrown around on Twitter, I went with this title. You like? :)

A friend recently got a blo at Blo Blow Dry Bar and raved about it. I'm always wishing for a quick wash & blo in which I don't have to wait 10+ hours for my appointment and it doesn't cost as much as a haircut would. I had to try Blo out for myself and dragged my sister along for their Grand Opening discounted deal last weekend. Blo is a super chic, no fuss, blow drying salon where you can get a yummy-scented wash, choose one of the hair styles on their menu, and come out looking fab. My sister and I both chose a blo with volume and beachy waves.

The location in Midtown is perfect for this modern, all pink and lucite decorated salon, and the Blo girls are sweet and wear funny shirts that say "I work for Blo". :) I totally recommend this spot for a quickie blo job. Ok, I'll stop now...

BowWowZerz has the most clever dog tags I've ever seen. My hubby actually found this one so he takes the credit. They have tons of unique, custom dog (and cat) tags, and they're all individually handmade! I chose the size, color, and exactly what I wanted written on the front and back, and it was created and shipped within just a few days. Extra plus: I always love a handwritten note with my purchase! <3

Pretty Little Corner

I have this awkward little corner by the stairs that has been haunting me since I moved in. It's a weird shape and size, and I had no idea what to put there. I pictured a big plant there but those can be expensive, and a bench would be weird because who would sit in a corner like that? Then I ran into this little number at HomeGoods!

Z Gallerie's version is bigger but $700.

Home Decorators version is more affordable at $370, but my find was less than half this price!

Please pardon this quick styling. I plan on adding real flowers in that vase, I swear! And I still think this little spot is missing something. Also, the knobs will soon be replaced with some like these from Home Depot. SO MUCH BETTER!

Turkey's Tasty Companion

Tomorrow is our company's annual Thanksgiving Potluck, lunch where each department is assigned a type of food and we all pitch in on the yumminess. With "hot sides" as our assignment, I quickly agreed to make Twice-Baked Potatoes. I made them last year too, and they flew off the serving plate! Although they're really easy to make, they take a long-ish time so it's not something I would make on a regular basis. But for Turkey Day, why not?!

Twice-Baked Potatoes with Bacon

4 baking potatoes (2-1/2 lb.)
1/2 cup milk 4 oz. (1/2 of 8-oz. pkg.) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, cubed
4 slices OSCAR MAYER Bacon, crisply cooked, crumbled

1. HEAT oven to 400°F. Prick potatoes in several places with fork. Bake 1 hour. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F.
2. CUT thin slice from top of each potato. Discard tops; scoop out centers into medium bowl, leaving 1/8-inch-thick shells. Beat potatoes with mixer 1 min. Add milk and cream cheese; beat until fluffy. Spoon into shells; top with bacon. Place in shallow baking dish.
3. BAKE 20 min. or until heated through.

Braids on the Brain

My favorite easy-breezy go-to hairstyle is the braid. Braids are made for those days when you don't feel like styling, don't feel like gelling, and definitely don't feel like blow-drying! Braiding on your own head is really tricky and can be very frustrating. I've recently pinned a bunch of braids I want to try out and practice in front of the mirror one of these days.

Best Turkey Meatballs EVER

So, you're tired of the same ol' turkey tacos and Cuban turkey picadillo? Cuz I sure am! Try these Mini Turkey Meatballs from the one & only Italian Queen Chef, Giada de Laurentiis! We buy a lot of ground turkey around here because it's lean and a filling alternative to red meat, but there are only so many times you can eat the same exact meal. I've never made meatballs from scratch in my life, but sooo glad I did!

Ingredients

1 small onion, grated
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 large egg
1/4 cup dried bread crumbs
3 tablespoons ketchup
1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
1/4 cup grated Pecorino Romano
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pound ground turkey meat
3 tablespoons olive oil
26 ounces Simple Tomato Sauce, recipe follows, or store-bought marinara sauce

Directions

Add the onion, garlic, egg, bread crumbs, ketchup, parsley, Parmesan, Pecorino, salt and pepper to a large bowl and blend. Mix in the turkey. Shape the turkey mixture into 1 1/4-inch-diameter meatballs. Place on a large plate or baking sheet.

Heat the oil in a heavy large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the meatballs and saute until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. Turn off heat. Transfer the meatballs to a plate. Pour off any excess oil. Add the marinara sauce, about 3 cups. Return all the meatballs to the pan. Turn the heat to medium-low and simmer until the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors blend, 15 to 20 minutes. Season the sauce, to taste, with salt and pepper.

{FYI: I left out the grated onion, garlic cloves, Pecorino, and parsley because I didn't have any, but I substituted it for garlic powder and it turned out A-OK! Served with penne pasta and voila--brand new poultry!}

The traditional first year anniversary gift is paper. We sure got each other a bunch of it today...Doggie Adoption papers!

We knew we wanted to adopt a pup and headed straight to the pound yesterday. Luckily for us all, we found DOMINO! Look at his sad & scared little face!

He's a 14 week old Jack Russell terrier mix that was found and brought in to the shelter on Friday. He was named "Manny" but that's just too weird for a dog {no offense to people who have dogs named Manny}. So as we went through an online list of names, we stopped at Domino--he just looks like a Domino! {Or maybe it's my subconscious reminding me how much I miss my favorite shelter mag}. I know he looks a little too skinny and definitely scraggly, but it was love at first sight! It's true what they say...You don't go to the pound to choose a dog, the dog chooses you! We'll take good care of you, Domino...promise! :)

Tacos, Margaritas, and Sombreros!

That title pretty much sums up the last 5 days as we traveled to Mexico in celebration of our first anniversary coming up this weekend! We went to Playa del Carmen again since we liked it so much the last time, and it's a pretty cheap getaway for us. One thing we didn't consider though... October is the rainiest season for the Mayan Riviera and it R A I N E D. Like, a lot. We had plans to visit Mayan ruins, all-inclusive waterparks, and beach clubs, but spent most of the time relaxing and people-watching instead. {Side note: Americans are so much more fun in Mexico!} But rain couldn't ruin our anniversary high! We made it as fun as it could be while drinking it up at local bars and filling our bellies with tacos - good enough for me!

Here's to many more anniversaries filled with relaxation, reflection, love, and memories!

I have a love for typography...especially in a home! Letters (or words, or numbers, or symbols) in a room personalizes the space, and doesn't everyone think it's fun to see your initials everywhere?! I have an 'M' and an 'R' sitting on my bookcase and I'm still on the hunt for a cool looking 'N' for the hubbs.

Solution for a Clumsy

OUCH! I fell on my stairs again yesterday and my bruises are turning a healthy purple right about now. I've never had stairs in my life and this is taking a lot of getting used to in my old age. On our house hunt, I never wanted stairs but we didn't really have a choice when this was the only house we were able to get. I fell for the first time about a month after we moved in, and my ass hit 4 steps before the big landing. This time I fell going UP the stairs, if you can even imagine that. I'm just clumsy. So in order to soften up my landings, I really need to do something about this. My dad gave me the idea to install a carpet runner, and I actually kinda like it! The carpet makes the home feel homier. I need to do some research about how to install it, but here are some ideas below to get me inspired.

I'm thinking of going the neutral way so that it can last forever with my ever-changing style.

Mark Diaz in the Making

So, {spoiler alert for those who haven't caught up on their DVR} Mark Diaz didn't win Design Star last week. I really thought he was the best face for HGTV, and I also support whoever reps the 3-0-5! But Meg won the competition fair and square and I'm sure she's going to be fun to watch in her upcoming show.

There was another contest for Mark to get a chance to host an online show. He lost again :( but if you're from Miami, you'll appreciate this. Mark is a man with a vision, trying to make something out of the old, abandoned Miami Marine Stadium that thrived here in the 60s and 70s, and was shut down after Hurricane Andrew damaged it. You can listen to him describe it all on the video below. He's got an interesting way of looking at the structure and finds cool treasures inside!

One Last Lucky Find

On Saturday, I ran some errands and stopped at Target. I had to pick up some paper plates and what did I see hidden behind the birthday gift wrap and plastic cups??? A men's Missoni silk tie! I snatched it up reeeal fast for my hubby! I can't believe someone actually hid it there. It's so cool, and would look great with his work suit. Show them city officials who's boss, babe!

I was anticipating the 'Missoni for Target' debut like a 6 year old at 11:59pm on Christmas Eve. Bad! I didn't even want to blog about it because I didn't want to add to all the hype already going on in the blogosphere. If you don't have a clue about what I'm talking about, you must be living under a rock. {sorry but it's true} Target announced their designer collaboration with Missoni a couple of months ago. Missoni one of my favorite designers--a super-awesome Italian luxury designer line of women's and men's fashion, home accessories, and lots of other amazing things with their world renowned zigzag print. It's famous and expensive and I thought I would never be able to own a Missoni garment in a million years...enter chic-cheap Target line.

I did my homework. I studied the lookbook, made a priority list of the items I wanted to hit first, and I thought I was prepared for the September 13th launch. Little did I know, the whole entire United States of America did their homework too. I took an early lunch break and headed to Midtown and what did I find?!? NOTHING. NADA. ZILCH. Everything was already gone. So depressing.

The Target website had crashed early in the morning due to high traffic, and it's still down! There were at least 50 women there harassing the Target employees for more merchandise, 'items in the back', specific times and dates of when new items are to arrive. It was nuts.

30's the new 20!

Today my Mr. enters into a whole new decade! The big 3-0!

We celebrated on Saturday with a Jay-Z themed party! {Trust me, it's very "him"} For some really weird reason, I woke up one morning singing Jay-Z's "30 Something" song and once I looked into the lyrics, I realized it would be a PERFECT theme! Unfortunately, I only had 2 days to plan so I didn't really go all out, but it was fun coming up with the few little details. My buddy created the e-vite, and everything stemmed from there.

We pulled together a few pictures of him from the honeymoon and my buddy photoshopped them to look like album covers. Then we came up with little food signs based on Jay-Z: "Hova Hummus", "30/30 Club sandwiches", "Jay Chee-Z crackers", "Big Chips & dip". The cake was also themed--we used the same e-vite image to create a photo cake!

He loved it and we had a great time! Cheers to Nel-Z and here's to many many more birthdays to come! I love you!

The September Issue

How convenient! Finally got around to watching The September Issue on the first day of September {although all you magazine fanatics know that September is really all about August}. Being a big fan of The Devil Wears Prada and Vogue, I already knew I'd be appreciative of this documentary. But...it was weird. I didn't sense too much of the crazy urgency that I'm used to working for a magazine publisher myself. I want to see the drama! I get that Anna Wintour is a difficult, complicated genius and it's really all about the Creatives that make the magazine happen, but where were the cat fights?! Nonetheless, it was fun to watch and I always get a kick from seeing celebrity photogs and fashion house designers convert a photoshoot into a true masterpiece.

I had my hubby rummage through the store to find this year's Vogue September issue for me. He found the last one at the store! It makes me happy to see that the modern day population still believes in SOME magazines. If you're interested, watch The September Issue to see why. It affects all of us, one way or another, I swear. Just read Meryl Streep's famous "Blue Sweater Scene" below:

"This... 'stuff'? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. Two of a Kind

I was SO happy when I checked my new unread post from Centsational Girl today! Lookie here! She just finished her bedroom and it has the same look as mine! {OMG! Does that mean my BR is famous?!} Of course, mine doesn't really compare to her beautiful bedroom that has every finishing touch in its perfect place, but it looks like I'm headed in the right direction.

Gosh, that's a dark photo, but I'm pretty darn close huh?! She's got the real Devon mirror, but I'm so grateful for my knock off. Now I'm having a Color-Combo-Crisis. Everything in my BR has the same 3 colors: blue, white, and gray. I love that it makes you feel like you just wanna fall sleep with these soothing colors, but I need some contrast. Should I add a touch of a complimenting color like green or purple? Or should I go with something more bold, contrasting color like orange!? I wish I can ask Centsational Girl for advice! :)

Weekend Discount Finds

Came across some awesome unplanned mega discounts this weekend--so exciting!

First stop, ZGallerie. I didn't know about any big sale but just went on a whim with my mom and sister. This Biscayne tray table was marked 50% off because it was slightly damaged. I couldn't pass up the deal, so I need to figure out how to get it fixed ASAP. This faux crocodile awesomeness will sit in a corner of my family room with a cool bar set on top. Just wait.

Then I went to Border's because they are going out of business and the entire store is 40%-60% off. I picked up a Feng Shui book {so that I can learn a little more about how to balance energy in the home}, a Miami Beach coffee table book {with lots of fun vintage photos}, and The Happiness Project {which I've been meaning to read for some motivation}. All half off!

Finally, I stopped at Crate & Barrel to use my store credit I've had in my wallet since the wedding! I would have never thought about buying a cheese board until I realized I needed a place to cut cheese {hee-hee!}. I also bought a potted plant that would look awesome holding up my new books on my bookshelf! ALL FO' FREE! woo.

Little Something to Make your House Warmer

That's what my bestie said when I thanked her for the super thoughtful housewarming gifts she gave us this past weekend!

Someone obviously pays close attention to me and my blog but I wouldn't expect anything less from her. Nicky & Andy gifted us the Un Homme/Une Femme vases from CB2 that I recently gushed about! So smart! And also the cah-utest Oliver Martini glasses that now come in so 3 really cute themes! (Lemon, Cherry, and Olive). Olive-You, Oliver!

I couldn't decide where to hang up the Man & Missy so the hubby decided for me and it's perfect. Naturally, these should be displayed in a bathroom, so the most used downstairs half-bath is where everyone can see it! I tried real hard to find artificial flowers that look like the ones in this CB2 pic, but had no luck. Instead I went with green dried leaf puff balls to act as their big heads. Aren't they funny?! This isn't a great pic because the don't look like they stand out against the white walls. {OMG a light bulb just popped out of my head! Maybe I should paint them!?}

This beeeeautiful mirror is from Z Gallerie. One of my favorite stores housing one of my favorite decor pieces. Price tag is $199 and although that doesn't seem like a really steep investment, it is for me--this girl's on a budget! It's a good thing I follow blogs that lend the best shopping tips because when I saw that both A la Mode and Dwellings by Devore posted about this mirror at HomeGoods for half the price, I freaked. I got like how I always get...obsessed! Had to run to all the HGs in my area to find it. One small problem: HGs don't all sell the same merchandise in each location, and both of these bloggers live out of state. Then I heard angels singing when I found it sitting up all by its lonesome self at the second HG I ransacked!

They say that mirrors in bedrooms break all the feng shui rules. I don't care, this one was perfect for the look I was going for and all these other rebels are just fine.

Bed Linen Snob

I'm sleepy and dreaming about being in my bed sheets. So naturally, it's the perfect time to share my 2 favorite bedding loves with you.

I used to be loyal to jersey sheets when I was young and naive. Then I met organic cotton and kicked jersey sheets to the curb. THEN, I met Egyptian cotton and let's just say it was extra hard for me to get up in the mornings. And then I met these. Nothing fancy, no extra frills, bells, and whistles. Just a yummy magical fabric that all sheets should be made of, in my opinion.

My mom gave us these Charter Club sheets in plain old white as a wedding gift, along with a fancier Ralph Lauren set. Sorry Ralph, but your sheets will never stand a chance. I actually waited and waited for the best sale of the year to get another set in the same color at a crazy price because you just never know... {Oh no, what if my dryer destroys my first AND second sets??? And then they become discontinued and I'll never be able to find them again??? Ok, I might need to get a back-up for the back-up ASAP!}

My #2 bedding love is this deelish blanket from Hotel Collection. Putting the whole comforter set on and off each day got old reeeal quick. Plus, my duvet comforter is heavy and hot, and these days we need all the air my A/C can crank! This little blanket is light and airy, yet cozy and warm at the same time. At first I froze my buns off, but I got used it and now I love it! Plus, it's zigzag and I'm obsessed. I also got this one in white but that gray is looking real tempting as another back-up. {Can you imagine what my linen closet looks like?! I've got more linens than Anna!}

X Marks the Spot

Ok, my last post and purchase got me crrraaazy! When I was hooked on the X-shape craze last year, everything out there was way outta budget. But after I found my X-benchy-bench this week, I did some research and now there are tons of pieces of furniture that fit the bill. I'm definitely not over the X trend but if I put X's all over my house, it will look worse than a pirate's map. So YOU get them, please! They're all too cool to pass up :)

Score!!! I can't believe I ran into this cute lil benchy-bench on my lunch break today. Stopping by my closest HG for an accent table, I ended up with this instead! Here it is already placed in the master bathroom. {Please excuse my cheesy iPhone pics.}

I know, I know...here I go again with the same old X legs, the same old studs, and the same old chevron fabric. When I'm into something, I go full force. But how can I resist? It's perfect! I realized how important a vanity seat is in a bathroom when I'm standing in front of the mirror for an hour blow-drying my hair. {Girls, do ya feel me!?} A seat was necessary! This lil bench seat ties more green into the room and acts as a functional piece for laying out my jammies and giving my bum a stylish place to rest. Success!

The Big 1

Is this the cutest munchkin-face you've ever seen??? I had a fun-filled weekend living it up for my baby nephew's 1st birthday. I can't believe a year ago we were visiting my sister at the hospital while trying to figure out how to hold a real live newborn for the first time. (I never had much practice with babies before what.so.ever.) He's been the perfect addition to the happiest year of my life! :)

We spent the birthday weekend soaking up the sun at Marco Island and stayed at the Marco Beach Ocean Resort where we had a little Dr. Seuss themed party for the birthday boy with our family. (He actually had 2 parties--this is the one at his grandparents' house!)

Note to self: Some babies are NOT fond of smash cakes!

RugRat Update

Here's the Tarjay winner laying on my living room floor! Ha, I tricked ya! I didn't choose any of the ones in my previous rug board. (Please excuse all the wrinkles, it needs more time to learn to lay flat).

This purchase was not at the top of my super long priority list but I couldn't pass up the offer! I found so many great area rugs on Tarjay's site but this one caught my eye and I thought it would be perfect for this space. At 15% off and free shipping, I jumped at the deal. {Did you know that rugs are really freaking expensive?} Unfortunately, I don't know diddly-squat about rugs. Apparently there are lots of things to consider when buying one: Is it hand knotted, hand tufted, flat weave, low pile, naturally or syntheticly dyed? Obviously, I didn't care about any of that because I think this one is actually a patio rug! Oh well. All I knew is that I wanted to stick to the same color scheme but mix up the patterns with a bold geometric look against the pillows.

The pictures are confusing. The rug is a light beige with a teal green pattern and the size is about 5' x 7'. This room is not even close to being finished, but this rug was a fun addition to the space.

Gallery Walls

Jonesing for some personalization in our home these days. The only photos that we’ve put up in frames are about 3 wedding shots and a couple of cute pics of our nephew. The other frames still display a bunch of those strangers in weird poses and I keep getting asked who those foreign family members are. It’s about time I fill those up with pics of real people we know!

Thankfully, I have a huge empty wall in the family room that would serve as the perfect gallery wall. I’ve been looking for ideas and there are so many ways to showcase a gallery wall to make it the main focus of a room. I can’t decide on the style I want to go for but one thing I do know is that I want the photos to be large in scale and consisting of our own pictures of the places we’ve visited together. Kinda sappy, I know…but this should be a conversation starter while also telling a story on its own. So clever. :)

So, I’ve categorized gallery walls into 3 different styles. Maybe if I walk through it on here with you, it will help me decide.

Neat & Orderly: Better option for the anal retentive who gets creeped out by lines that don’t match up and colors that aren’t exactly the same. Everything is aligned perfectly and photos also all have the same look.

Organized Chaos: Exact opposite of the Neat & Orderly. Frames don’t match up but colors and mats complement each other nicely. Usually mixing art and photos, and frames are different sizes and shapes but yet still fit like a puzzle.

Scattered but Consistent: A mix of the two styles. Frames can be different sizes and shapes but everything is aligned and even.

Ok, that worked! I think I got it! Since I like all of the looks so much, I will try out a couple of styles on two separate areas in my house! For the family room I will shoot for the Neat & Orderly in a large scale with black frames and white mats. For the wall by the stairs I will go with the Scattered but Consistent look using different frames in different sizes. I don’t want to go gallery-wall-overboard so I want to keep this as minimal, clean and neat as possible. Time to dig up the photos!

I love rugs! Small kitchen rugs, patio rugs, but especially area rugs! They pull the room together and complete the look. I've been doing lots of research and it looks like rugs are used in every room of a home, even the homes that have beautiful hardwood floors. But how do they do it? Area rugs can cost a fortune--sometimes as much as a mortgage payment! After looking at a few websites with cheaper alternatives, I realized Tarjay really does have great looks at affordable prices! Productive Weekend

Wow, what a weekend. Cleaning, upkeeping, installing, building, drilling...all jam-packed into 2 days! We had a few good weekends off from housework but had to hit up the to-do list that kept building up. The new peephole was installed {can you believe we didn't have one?!}, my beautiful mirror was hung up {more on that to come soon}, and we deep-cleaned the heck out of the place for 5. Whole. Hours.

Then, the list tripled! Hubby had a dream that I made him take me to Ikea and I thought it was a GREAT IDEA! I took my 'Things to Get at Ikea' list {I have a list for everything} and didn't waste any time. As much as I love getting a good deal there, I really detest the drive, the mobs, and the ginormous receipt I end up with because I can't control myself. This time I beat the system. Ha!

1. Expedit bookcase: I've been wanting a bookcase since before I moved in so that I can showcase a fun display. I decided on the Expedit because I wanted something cheap to be able to hack. We'll see how that goes...

2. Minut light: We have a bedroom that is just used for storage for right now. We had ripped off the fugly ceiling fan when we moved in but then realized that the light went with it. We wanted something simple to serve the purpose and this one was our best bet.

3. Kajsa curtains: I've gone to Ikea about 5 times in the last 3 months and have never come across these curtains. We have a very long pair of sliding glass doors in our home office and Ikea seemed to be the only place I was able to find an afforable alternative with a cool design at the length I needed. Perfect!

4. Fejka artificial plants: Stocked up on 3 artificial plants to spruce up some lonely bathroom vases.

5. Torka dried bouquet: These are for my beautiful floor vase given to us as a housewarming gift.

5. Lack shelves: Turns out they're too wide for the place I want to put them. So back to Ikea I go...dammit!

Sweet & Salty Salmon Recipe

Deeeelish! My cousin loves to cook. I want to love to cook. I've been trying to get a little creative in the kitchen lately and I asked her to send me some of her favorite recipes for a lil inspiration. This one was just up my alley.

Sweet & Salty Salmon

Ingredients

1 lb. salmon fillets
1/3 cup brown sugar, divided {I used light brown sugar}
1 tsp. lemon pepper, divided
1 tsp. garlic powder divided
1/3 cup low sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp olive oil
1 1-inch piece fresh ginger root, minced {I didn't use this and it was perfectly awesome without it}
1/3 cup orange juice

Prep for Marinade
Rub salmon with about 1 tbsp of brown sugar. Lightly sprinkle with lemon pepper and garlic powder; rub seasoning into fish.

Into a small saucepan set over medium heat, pour soy sauce and olive oil. Stir in ginger and remaining brown sugar, lemon pepper, and garlic powder. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat, stir in orange juice.

Place fish and marinade into a resealable plastic bag, seal, and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 3 hours.

Time for the Real Deal
Preheat broiler. Place fish in a foil-lined baking pan. Reserve marinade.

Broil fish 4 minutes. Remove from oven and baste with marinade. Return to oven and broil 2 more minutes. Turn fish and broil until fish flakes easily, about 4 more minutes. {I had to do an additional 4 minutes} Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Serve with brown rice and steamed broccoli...and wine of course!

I found my new Martha

UGH! I'm so jealous of all these furniture refurbishers who are able to create a kick-ass piece of hidden awesomeness for just a few bucks. But SHE is my #1 favorite. She is...even better than Martha Stewart! {omg, did I just say that!} Check out the latest masterpiece she refurbished from an old, broken bamboo dresser she scored at a thrift store for just $25! I love that there's a possibility that there could be some history to this piece because of its age and it makes me daydream about where this little dresser was probably sitting and who owned it in its heyday. {...still daydreaming...} Anyway, a little peacock color paint and some lovin' turned into the most fab dresser I've ever laid my eyeballs on.

It still has its vintage feel but with just a brand new make-over. {my fave!}

I would love to see if maybe I can pull something like this off. But I've got 3 big problems:
#1. There are no real vintage furniture thrift stores in Miami {damn this young city!}
#2. I've never done anything like this in my life and I don't think I have the knowledge, patience, or cojones
#3. I'm a clutz. period.

Best Kept Hair Secret

My hair is long and mostly wavy. While most people have an average of 100,000 strands of hair on their head {yes, I looked it up}, I swear I have triple that number at the very least! It's deceiving though, it doesn't look like it would be that much but if you ask any hair stylist that has ever worked on my head, they can confirm that without reservation. It's actually very annoying... I get charged more than the norm, hair stylists dread the day I have to return, etc. The only plus I see is that I'll never go bald :) Phew!

So with that said, I don't have the time during the week to upkeep this monstrosity. Enter J.Crew's life-saving hair accessories! They have the very best clips, headbands, pins, and so on! I'm so picky when it comes to these things because of the mop I have on my head, and I can attest to the fact that J.Crew's hair accessories rarely break, they hold the hair up properly, and they have the cutest styles that don't make you look like a teenage wanna-be.

They are a little on the spency side so I wait for a sale to stock up. This weekend I bought 3 leather studded headbands {for those bad hair days} all for $12! These were on super sale and not even available for purchase online so drop by in person and see what's left. Keep up the good work Jenna Lyons! You never let me down.

Good Luck Charms

I know, I know...here's more confirmation of my superstitious-craziness! You must be so tired of hearing about it. But I <3 good luck, don't you??

Sitting on a faux crocodile tray in the foyer, are my 2 new good luck charms {well, 3 if you want to count my adorable baby nephew}. My mom gave us both the cute owl and the crystal elephant. I couldn't find too much info about owls except that they symbolize wisdom, so I'll just pretend that it's good luck and watches out for us with it's mighty-awesome wisdom. :)

The crystal elephant is more special. She brought it back from Prague on her most recent trip because she's a firm believer of good luck charms too. My mom has always had an elephant figurine in our house. I never paid any attention to it. But when I moved into my own house, she said we needed an elephant. I looked it up and it actually has a nice story behind it. The elephant represents loyalty, good luck, and fortune. Apparently, it's extra lucky if the trunk is raised. In Feng Shui, it is said that elephants protect the household and bring fertility luck to those wishing for babies. {Hmmm.... Now I'm wondering what's the real reason this gift was meant for.}

Then she told me that I'm supposed to place it facing backwards at the entrance of the house. No idea where that came from but I'll do it anyway for extra points. This better not have been some prank I just fell for!

Had lots of fun celebrating my sister's 30-something birthday this weekend! We started off with the usual mall-strolling {including an extra companion this time}

then a delicious dinner at Atrio at the chic Conrad Hotel.

We couldn't help but swoon over the awesome decor. Now that I know what certain things really cost, I know that this designer spent a pretty penny on the Hilton's tab. We have stayed here a couple of times and it's definitely luxe with beautiful views. Perfect for a celebration!

Design Star is Back!

It's that time again and I'm so excited! The new season of HGTV's Design Star will be debuting this Monday, July 11th at 9 pm. {YEAAHHHHHHHH!!!} I was hooked into the last two seasons and have been so happy with the winners Antonio Ballatore and Emily Henderson. This year they're cranking it up a notch by including Mr. Color Splash, David Bromstad, into the mix as a mentor, and some undisclosed celebrity judges. The same panel of original judges remain: Vern Yip, Candice Olson, and my ultimate fave, Genevieve Gorder. The contestants are a crazy mix of professional interior designers, retail merchandisers, stylists, and artists. Read about them here and cast your vote for your fan fave.

The drama, the competition, the great exaggerated design obstacle courses...I love it all! Let the games begin!

All in the Family

Here's our family room in all it's yellow & gray glory! We waited 3 long months for these couches because they were on back order but I. needed. gray. couches. There was nothing else out there that I had a sofa-crush on; trust me, we looked everywhere. But it should be obvious by now that I like the hunt. I stalked every Target in Miami for these Dwell Studio flower pillows on my lunch breaks, and those smaller yellow pillows from Ikea were the perfect addition. Thrown on the side is the softest, most yummiest blankie which is also reversible. I scored this one on sale during the Christmas season, and I can't wait to get a back-up because I use it every day. The coffee table was a generous donation from my sister and sitting on top are a couple of W.E. collection items. {I'm thinking of starting a W.E. museum here one day}

A gallery wall on that big empty blue space is in the works. Time to do a little inspiration research!

Loving all the wrinkling on the sofas...it means we're definitely breaking them in!

Granny's Skills

So excited because today I picked up my brand new dining bench cushion from my favorite seamstress, my granny! I love my dining set, and I waited months and months for it to go on sale. It finally went on sale in June and I jumped at the opp {apparently it only goes on sale once a year!}

...but I wasn't a fan of the $60 cushion that came with the bench. I opted for switching to another cushion, except that it was nearly impossible to find cushions in this size anywhere! I finally found one in an ugly outdoor fabric and chose this embroidered trellis fabric from curtain panels. Granny put it together and voila!

We have lots of fabric left so the hunt for chair cushions begins now!

A Buddy's Bedroom Do-Over

Remember my friend who was recently freed from her tasteless roommate? Well she wanted to create her own personal touches in her apartment and here’s her happily ever after!

Almost every day on our lunch break, we hit up the nearest bargain shops to get ideas. Of course, I tagged along because I could never pass up the chance to go shopping. Dayana was on a budget and was able to put this bedroom together for $125! This is a rental property so throwing tons of paint on the walls is sometimes pointless. Fortunately, it helps that she’s a super-talented graphic designer and a little mural painting did the trick! While most of us would be really intimidated by the thought of painting free-hand on the wall, she did it in less than an hour…BLINDFOLDED!! (just kidding!)

The bed and nightstand were already hers, but here is the breakdown of her new purchases:

1. Studded accent pillow from West Elm on clearance: $15

Stacked Storage Copycats

As much as I love my West Elm, I sometimes can't bring myself to buy things there knowing that I can probably find it cheaper elsewhere. When I saw these apothecary jars in last season's catalog, I knew I wanted them for our new bathroom. But at $34 and $49, I thought that was a bit overpriced.

So I did a quick search online and found these copycats for half the price! I've filled them with cotton balls, Q-tips, Dove soap bars, and facial cottons. As you can see there are still a couple of holes to fill but don't you worry, I'll think of something!

I'm Sea Fan's Biggest Fan

Like I've said before, I'm a teeny-tiny bit superstitious. I heard that seashells shouldn't be used as home decor because it brings bad luck. Of course, I'm sure it's a silly myth but I still avoid it like the plague because #1. I'm senseless and #2. I don't need the potential of any type of bad luck in my life. I like it just the way it is, thank you very much! But coral...coral is technically NOT a seashell right? In my book, coral doesn't count so it's my new BFF. I found this great DIY coral sea fan artwork below and decided to try my own spin.

Here is my DIY version!

These sea fans are hung up in the small 'wash room'. I found the fans at HomeGoods for $6 each and again politely asked my hubby to spray paint them in silver so they really shine! I placed them inside shadow boxes from Michael's with shimmery green scrapbook paper. The shadow boxes were also spray painted to flat white.

No, not the gasoline…I’m talking about the pretty pattern! I’m a sucker for anything zig-zag. I know, it’s so 2010. But I can’t help it. Chevron wins my heart each and every time. I find it so modern yet funky.

Bathroom Break!

Our pride & joy...the master bath! It took 3 complete weeks to get this bathroom in shape. We didn't know how bad the bathroom really was until the remodeling dude showed us. Tiles were cracked, sitting on top of layers of mold, which created a leak, and tons of other scary issues. It HAD to be re-constructed from scratch. We took this photo from an online source as inspiration, and went to work!

The floors and shower walls are 16x16" multi-colored slate. Shower floors and tub wall are stone mosaic tiles. Vanities were custom made, sink vessels and faucets were purchased here, and walls were painted in Behr's Graceful Gray. It looks pretty darn close to the inspiration picture, doesn't it? Mission accomplished and we couldn't be happier.

Did it All for the Nook

We have this small space by the kitchen that serves as the breakfast nook. This little spot is so important. It's where we eat our meals and plop down our stuff when we get home. It had to be functional.

We added a high-top dinette set in black with a crackled glass top, a set of plaid Anthropologie plates as wall decor which was a housewarming gift from my sister, and a George Kovacs aluminum pendant lamp. I originally wanted the Ikea Foto lamp to light up this spot but it just didn't work out.

Obviously, I'm not crazy about the 80s-inspired glass blocks for a window so I might cover that up with white faux wood blinds one of these days. You likey?

New Roommate

Minnie’s baaaaack!

I’m babysitting my own dog for 3 weeks while my parents are on vacation. She WAS my dog first but my dad took custody years ago. It’s funny to see her climbing up and down the stairs of our new home. I think she likes the sound of her footsteps on wood laminate floors because she’s not used to it. We are training her NOT to jump on couches {in which she’s also not used to} since we got our new ones in this weekend. Stay tuned for couch posts coming soon!
It’s really difficult to get good shots of her since she’s a hyper hot mess. These were the best 3 out of about 14! :)

I aspire to become a hacker…an Ikea hacker! Apparently this is the latest craze and I guess I’ve just been living under a rock for the last few years, but now I’m ALL over it! It makes sense; these super-smart/super-creative/sometimes-bored people purchase cheap Ikea items and turn it into awesome DIY works of art to furnish or accessorize their homes. I don’t blame them—if you’ve got the talent and inspiration while trying to get through these tough times, go for it and make us drool! I’ve come across so many awesome Ikea hacks and I want to copy them all! Where to start?!

Domesticating Myself

Woo! Last night I made a totally new meal without following a recipe FOR THE FIRST TIME! I'm proud of my Coconut Curry Mahi Mahi! Most people I know don't really like curry, or Thai food for that matter, but I have grown to really like it in the last few years. Here's my little meal inspired by Moon Thai, my favorite!

P.S. This is not the real photo but something close (and much prettier) I found online.

Melz's Coconut Curry Mahi Mahi

Ingredients:
2 fillets of Mahi Mahi
1 cup of frozen peas & carrots
3 tsp of curry powder
¼ can of coconut milk, ¼ can of coconut milk
½ cup of water, ½ cup of water
2 tbsp of olive oil
1 tsp of garlic powder
Salt & pepper to taste

Steps:
1. Thaw the fillets of fish. Add garlic powder, salt, and pepper on both sides and set aside.

2. In a pan, sauté the olive oil and curry powder. Add ¼ cup of coconut milk and ½ cup of water and let it boil for a few minutes. Add fish and frozen peas & carrots to pan and let it boil. Turn fish every 3 minutes.

3. Add other ¼ cup of coconut milk and other ½ cup of water and continue to turn fish for another 5-10 minutes until it is thoroughly cooked. If you prefer for it to be more watery, add more coconut milk and water as needed.

4. Serve over brown rice with roasted asparagus.

5. EAT!

My DIY Mirror Soul Mate

Love at first sight! I have found my mirror soul mate in the back of a HomeGoods waiting for me in a corner all dirty and alone. I first saw this mirror on the blog of DIY Genius, Centsational Girl, when she created her warm & welcoming sitting area. Her mirror is hung up all nice & pretty above the mantel, bringing a modern twist to her organic, natural theme. The mirror I found is much smaller but I had the perfect spot for it!
Although it looks beautiful in white, silver would look best in my space. It had black smudges of paint all over it and I didn’t like the look, so I scooped up some Rustoleum stainless steel spray paint and politely asked my Hubby do the dirty work {thanks for saving me from pointer-finger cramps!} I can't believe I found it, and I love how it turned out! It’s my favorite DIY project yet.

Check it out, hanging in all its glory. One day this console table nook will be filled with lots of other DIY fun-ness! :)

Getting Hives Isn't Always a Bad Thing

Gosh, what is it with me and my weird obsession with this pattern? It attracts me like honey to a bee! (sorry I had to...)

A buddy of mine wants to re-do her apt now that her tasteless roommate vacated the premises and I turned her on to West Elm's awesome sale going on now. Markdowns up to 70% off! {Disclaimer: They don't pay me to do this, but I can't help it. I love W.E.}

While shopping for her, I couldn't help but snatch this up for myself. The new Hive Vase had to be mine. It's so me. I got the stubby yellow one but I'm dyyyying to do a little display just like this with all the colors! Aren't they beautiful!? I'm thinking of putting a real plant in it in my effort to turn my thumb green!

Kitchen Reno!

The kitchen was one part of the house that needed to be remodeled. I'm so glad we did this reno before we moved in for so many reasons. It was an ugly sight, it became a huge mess, and we spend so much time in the kitchen so it was well worth the wait. (Click to see the image larger)

I knew from the start how I wanted our kitchen to look. The counter tops and cabinetry were made from some type of beige formica laminate, and they had to go! The counter tops were switched out to black midnight granite, and luckily, the structure of the cabinets were okay and didn't need to be re-done. We had them refaced to white faux wood in a squared modern design. The knobs/handles were also switched out to stainless steel sticks, and we added a mosaic tile backsplash to all back panels. The backsplash was a custom order from the H.D. called Winter Opal. The faucet and sink were also replaced to a brushed nickel finish.

We still need to change out the cream colored appliances, but we're taking it one step at a time. That will make a world of a difference! And yes, our kitchen is blue. It's a little odd, I know, but goes great with the backsplash don't ya think!?

The Half Bath

There's a repeating theme across my house and I didn't realize it until everything was already done and put in place. I guess I really like the blue & white color combo. I've got a blue & white family room, kitchen, bedroom, and even a half bath, and none of this was planned, I swear. In my defense they are all different types of blues, OK?!

I am obsessing over the West Elm Mediterranean feel they've got going on with all the navy and white. Although I don't mind spending the extra bucks on something I really love, I knew I would find something just as awesome on the cheap. {Enter Walmart's crazy-great bathroom decor!} Here are just some of the great patterns they just came out with.

But I chose this one that's navy & white...Ta-da!!!

The bathroom was peach, so we painted it a nice neutral tone: Glidden's Oyster Shell. The striped vase is from Tar-jay, and the silver mirror is from Home Goods. Slap on a couple of new silver knobs and voila! I'm still missing flowers for the vase and some type of wall art on the wall behind the loo. It will most probably be another DIY project....so stay tuned!

'Foyer' Enjoyment

Foyer & Living Room

Here's the 'before' photo of the room {with my parents as subjects :) }
The foyer/living room is 2 stories tall and totally intimidated us at first. I really did NOT want to paint this room but the previous tenants made a ton of holes all over the place and they needed to be patched up. There was no possible way we could paint this room ourselves so we hired some help and chose 2 complimenting colors from Home Depot's Behr paint: Baked Biscotti and Smoked Umber. We had to add 100% more color to them so that it wouldn't look so light. Before it was a warm beige and now it's a purpley-grayish tone.

That ginormous window in the photo was a big issue. Anyone from the outside can see right in and I didn't want to spend a fortune on elaborate draping. We purchased cellular shades from the H.D.'s custom orders and case is now closed.

Here are the 'afters' with my cheesy drawings as a wish list.
The cocktail table, end table, and console table were the very first items I purchased for our home...about 2 months before we even knew we were closing! I fell in love with the X concept and hunted them down at the cheapest price out there (Overstock.com).

The sofa is the Tory from Macy's in Sage. I love the tufting and the color looks great with accent pillows from West Elm, Pier 1, and that little silver guy is from Home Goods (my absolute favorite stop for a bargain).

Square sconces (in which the Hubby painted silver), candle holders, and purple crocodile tray are from Z Gallerie during last year's Christmas sale! Polka dot vase is from Ikea.

This still feels a little too matchy-matchy to me so I'm dying to bring more eclectic-ness to this room (yes, I just made up that word...) So, my friends, any ideas??

Mi Casa es Su Casa

I don't really know why I was holding back so much, but the more I ~~stalk~~ admire all these home decor/home reno blogs, the more I'm becoming a little more confident to show the blogosphere our new home! I think I'm ready... It is no where near being "done" because this will always be my very favorite work in progress for the rest of my life. I change my mind about things waaay too often.

So, here's our casa. It took about 8 months to call it ours. Nothing short about a Short Sale, I tell ya. But it is finally ours and we couldn't be happier! It was born in 2005 so it's pretty modern for the most part, but with all these cookie-cutter construction homes around here, a few parts of the house were built poorly. After a month of reno, we finally moved in and as you will see in the up-coming pics, we're not totally settled in yet but pretty darn close to it!

I found this read very refreshing this morning :)
Health:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

Real Life 101

I’m going all philosophical on you now but just hear me out. Talking to my sister the other day, I blurted out a thought and haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Why don’t universities and colleges teach us about REAL LIFE? I’m talking real life situations that regular normal, human beings will eventually go through at some point in life. I realized that there have been so many instances that if only I had a small dosage of preparedness, I would definitely feel more confident in my decisions. Unfortunately, the academia only regulates courses that include insignificant math formulas and Ceramics as part of our curriculum. Ok, I get it—quizzing me on 32 chapters on Physics III are meant to prepare us for the job force (I’m still waiting for my employer to make me put that piece of knowledge to use one day!) But I just don’t see why we can’t squeeze in a couple of weeks of some really basic things that would make us smarter citizens in the real world.

For example:

1. Spring Semester: Credit Card Basics, 3 credits
Chapter 1: Benefits and consequences of applying for credit cards
Chapter 2: The law and how to avoid a judge and jury
Chapter 3: Easy step-by-step instructions on how to pay off debt as easy as it is to acquire it

2. Summer Semester: The Real Cost of LIVING, 3 credits
Chapter 1: Leasing a home
Chapter 2 to 35: BUYING your first home!!!
Chapter 36: Budgeting effectively

3. Fall Semester: Multi-Tasking 101, 3 credits
Chapter 1: How to run a business, stop to have 3 kids, do homework, do your taxes, make dinner, call your grandmother, mow the lawn, schedule appointments with the electrician and cable guy, do 8 loads of laundry, etc. etc. etc.
Chapter 2: How to do everything in Chapter 1 and be sane

And then if you pass at the end, you get a certificate and you can use that as your ticket to get an awesome, well-paying job that is guaranteed until retirement. Now, is that too much to ask??? :)

The Happiest of Birthdays

I celebrated my 20-something birthday this weekend, and boy was it HAPPY! Started off with some great news, my favorite lunch spot with my co-workers, a delicious meal at Chophouse Miami, awesome gifts from the Hubbs and family, a night on the town with the greatest friends, and an insanely delicious cake to top it all off! It really couldn't get any better than that!

Such yummy steak, but we also tried some kangaroo and alligator, and it was delish!
Partied it up and one of my favorite places to dance my calves off!

Something really cool made my day yesterday. I have been anticipating the arrival of the premier issue of a magazine like no one’s business! Two things about me you must know: #1. I love magazines. All my life I’ve wanted to work for a magazine (and hey, I kinda-sorta do now!). And #2. I have this horrible addiction to décor and interiors nowadays…it’s sick. Yesterday, my 2 favorite things came to digital life. Please hurry and check out High Gloss Magazine A.S.A.P. Ok, I know it’s not a real tangible magazine, but it’s the latest craze in the Publishing world these days…unfortunately. As real magazines continue to fold with this sucky economy, former editors have joined forces to create digital magazines to fill our void. Thanks former editors!

High Gloss features beautiful interiors, trendy décor, and fashion. Here are some of my favorite pages.

Lonny Magazine is also a favorite. It launched last year and has become extremely popular in the blogging world.

Will it be the same to now stalk my inbox, rather than my mailman for new issues? Maybe not, but at least these editors are still gracing us with their talent! Phew!

Book Love

It’s pretty safe to say that I’m slightly obsessing over coffee table books at the moment. Only thing is that I don’t have a freaking coffee table yet. But when I do get one, you better believe there will be some nice looking books sitting on it! I’ve picked up a few recently that I know I will be so proud to display. I’ve purchased them all on sale, because well, coffee table books can be so darn expensive!

I picked this one up at Anthropologie for just $20. The girl at the register couldn’t believe it was on sale and she keep reminding me what a great book this was. Made me want it even more! Rebecca Moses, fashion designer, shares how to develop your own personal style with wit and humor. The register girl was right—it’s awesome!

I’ve been wanting this book since it first came out and the magazine was still in production. Unfortunately, the magazine folded, but I never forgot about this book. Although it’s already a couple years old, it’s still a very popular hot topic on all the home décor blogs and still sold all over the place at regular price! But I found this little treasure at Marshall’s for only $20...SCORE! It made my Thursday last week :) LOTS of inspiration and tips for the home designing addiction I now suffer from.

Don’t judge me—I still love Lauren. The girl’s got style and this book is sooo fun. She gives tons of advice from how to style your hair, to how to pack your luggage, and a zillion things in between. But the best part are the pretty pictures, of course. This one’s also from Marshall’s for just $13.

Another design goodie about Vera Neumann, design legend from the 60’s. This one was just $10 at West Elm!

I acknowledge the fact that this future coffee table will need some guy-ness incorporated into it since it will be OURS not MINE, so I gotta get the this one for the Hubbs. Jay-Z Decoded. He would LOVE it. :)

Kenny Austin is the man!

I'll be honest. Videography was not a top priority for us, considering the long list of expenses we had. But as I kept running into wedding blogs of beautiful movie-style videos, it slowly started to crawl up on the list. There are some really talented videographers in Miami that will squeeze a tear or 10 out of your eyes with each video they make. But unfortunately, we couldn't justify the prices. But then after a few google searches I found MXI Studios. Kenny was really prompt with returning e-mails and made it really convenient for us to meet with him. His packages were at a perfect price point for the quality you're gonna get. And he's up to date with the competition out there because he offers videos at HD quality and BluRays!

Kenny arrived at the hotel right on time and filmed us girls getting ready first. He then headed out to the church a little ahead of me, and shot the boys in the garden before my car arrived. He's really creative in his technique, and had some ideas for shooting us outside the reception which made for an amazing wedding trailer.

I'm SO glad I booked a videographer, and so relieved it was with MXI Studios. If you're on the fence about hiring a videographer, remember about how important it actually is. The photos and videos are the only real concrete memories you'll keep over the years.

Wedding Reviews: Dreams and Designs, B

When you visit the Miami Tower Sky Lobby on a regular day, you will realize it’s just that—a lobby. It’s not fancy; there are huge elevators, big couches, and a reeeally big green marble reception desk. You really have to make the effort to close your eyes and envision a wedding reception there because there is no other way you can see it. The only way to disguise this is to hire a company to put up drapery all around the lobby to cover all of it. I was informed that only one company is licensed to do this kind of work at the Miami Tower, and that is Dreams & Designs. I was so used to researching and bargaining for the best deal, and just had to bite my tongue with this one. I met with the owners, Ana and her husband, at the location and they explained how it all works. I chose the white color draping, and contracted them to hang it to cover the elevators, lobby desk, and a huge colorful painting by the DJ. You can drape more areas but it wasn’t necessary. The room looked fabulous, but I really wish this was included in the venue contract. I found it to be very expensive, but apparently other draping companies in Miami charge about the same. Thankfully, I booked at a good time because they did include 10 uplites with my contract. I also contracted them to do our personalized monogram lighting on the dance floor.

Dreams and Designs does all kinds of different event décor. They have some pretty amazing photos of their work on their website. Makes me want to have another party!

Pantry Liquors, A

Here’s another idea I stole from Martha the Great! Mini wine bottles as favors! I went to a few liquor stores including the big name chains, but found the best price at Pantry Liquors. Pete, the owner was so accommodating and gave me a quote within just a day or two. I bought 4 cases of the Robert Mondavi Woodbridge mini wine bottles, and I still have about 20 bottles left over! Anyone care for some wine?

Hanging from the wine bottles were these cute heart bottle stoppers I purchased here. Turns out these bottle stoppers are sold all over the internet, but I found that this website had good reviews. They arrived perfectly packaged, although I didn’t use their packaging. Check them out, they have tons of varieties to choose from depending on the theme you want.

Wedding Reviews: Paper and Printing

I tried to DIY as many things as possible. Having basic knowledge of some design programs, I thought I would take a stab out of designing some of the wedding collateral. I ended up creating the place cards, menu cards, wine bottle labels, monogram for dance floor, monogram for napkins, vodka luge sign, and some other miscellaneous items. After hitting the first designer’s block, I wanted to quit and run straight to my designer friend. But I stuck through it and I’m pretty happy with my pieces. They’re not the coolest, most awesome designs in the world but they were mine so I’m OK with them. :)

Paper and More, A

I purchased all the fancy metallic paper from Paper and More and I thought they were great! The quality is professional, the price is the best I found online, and it shipped right away.

AlphaGraphics, A

I was able to print some things at an undisclosed location, but other things needed a bit more of a nicer touch. Staples was going to charge me a fair price for printing, but apparently their printers could not support the extra thick paper I had. I remembered passing by AlphaGraphics once, and stopped in to check it out. They had just opened this location and their equipment is brand-spanking-new. The owner, Bharat, was really helpful and the price was great. They do everything from designing, to printing, mailing, direct marketing and so much more. My designs printed beautifully on the metallic paper. Check it out for yourselves.

Wedding Reviews: Ana Paz Cakes, A

Ha! This is a funny story. Back in 2007, I found my dream cake. {Yup, that long ago…when a wedding was no where near the topic of conversation} I’m nuts. I saw it on a ‘Today Throws a Martha Stewart Wedding’ segment and stalked the designer. It was a Gail Watson fondant cake with sugar ribbons sitting in different directions on four round layers. Perfection. I saved it on my computer for “a rainy day”.

I was able to get this cake of my dreams, thanks to Ana Paz Cakes! The cake was included in my venue package, however the options that were deemed as “free” were… let’s just say they were less than modern. So when I chose my own design, it did cost a little more. But with all the details and extras that I added to it, the price was not bad at all. Two of the four layers were dummy, one layer was chocolate, and the other layer was their famous vanilla. I don’t think the cake ended up tasting as great as the taste test we had in the beginning, but it looked really nice and just like the picture I brought her.

Ana was sooo sweet {pun intended} and she has great ideas. She knows everyone in the business because she’s been around for years and years. I heard from a bride-to-be friend of mine that my cake made it to her picture book of cakes! OMG IT’S FAMOUS!!

The only issue I had was that she was only available for appointments one day a week for just a couple of hours. But, once I was there, I never had to wait. FYI, she is now only based out of the Doral location.

Wedding Reviews: Flowers by Vivian Colls, A+

Ok, I know I keep saying this, but for realsies...Vivian, her team, and her flower arrangements were my FAVORITE part about our wedding. I met with 2 other florists but no one compared to Vivian. She was the only one who understood my vision and she definitely exceeded my expectations that night. She had no problem meeting with me a few times {ok ok, 6 times…} to get all the details down perfectly before I even signed a contract. The floral trial was the moment I knew I would LOVE my wedding. I couldn’t believe she was able to re-create something I only had in my mind. And, this woman went above and beyond her call of duty. I was stuck on having this specific flower for my bouquet and it was out of season. Vivian worked her magic and she surprised me with the best gift ever!

Vivian was not only our florist, she was our day-of coordinator too! I knew I could trust her to put all my hard work into place: napkins, place cards, ribbon ties, etc. She had an assistant who was also just as great and made us feel comfortable the whole night. I truly recommend Vivian Colls to everyone. My guests are still complimenting me on my flowers!
